Acidity and gastric pain: when you need an endoscopy

Most acidity settles with simple changes and short courses of medicine. Some symptoms, though, need an endoscopy to see what is going on.

Published by Disha Hospital, Chitradurga · Updated

Common symptoms

A burning feeling in the chest or upper stomach, sour taste in the mouth, bloating, belching and discomfort after meals or when lying down.

Common causes

Large or late meals, spicy and oily food, smoking, alcohol, stress, some painkillers and an infection of the stomach called H. pylori.

What helps

Smaller meals, finishing dinner two to three hours before bed, raising the head end of the bed, cutting down smoking and alcohol, and medicines a doctor prescribes.

When an endoscopy is advised

Trouble or pain swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, weight loss without trying, anaemia, new symptoms after about 45 to 50 years of age, or symptoms that keep coming back despite treatment.

What the test involves

A thin flexible camera is passed through the mouth while you lie on your side. It usually takes 10 to 15 minutes. You need to fast for about six hours before.
