Nephrology
Kidney disease is often silent until late. A nephrologist finds it early and helps slow it down.
What is nephrology?
Nephrology is the medical care of the kidneys. A nephrologist diagnoses and manages conditions that reduce kidney function — very often caused by long-standing diabetes or high blood pressure — and works to protect the kidney function you still have.
Who it is for
People with diabetes or high blood pressure, raised creatinine on a blood test, protein in the urine, swelling of the feet or face, or a family history of kidney disease.
Conditions we see
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD)
- Kidney disease from diabetes or high blood pressure
- Raised creatinine or urea
- Protein or blood in the urine
- Swelling of the legs or face
- Recurrent kidney stones — medical management
- Sudden drop in kidney function

FAQ
Questions patients ask
When should I see a kidney specialist?
If your creatinine is raised, you have protein in your urine, or you have had diabetes or high blood pressure for several years, ask for a kidney review.
Can kidney damage be reversed?
Some causes of a sudden drop in kidney function can recover with treatment. Long-standing kidney disease usually cannot be reversed, but its progress can often be slowed.
What tests check kidney health?
Commonly a blood test for creatinine (to estimate kidney function, eGFR), a urine test for protein, and sometimes an ultrasound scan of the kidneys.
Should I stop my painkillers?
Do not stop any prescribed medicine on your own. Some painkillers can affect the kidneys — bring all your medicines so the doctor can review them.
