Typical symptoms
Pain that begins around the navel and moves to the lower right side, getting worse over hours. Loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting and a mild fever are common. Pain often worsens when walking, coughing or pressing the area.
Why it cannot wait
An inflamed appendix can burst, spreading infection inside the abdomen. Do not wait for the pain to settle, and avoid taking laxatives or strong painkillers before a doctor has examined you.
How it is diagnosed
A doctor examines the abdomen and usually orders blood tests and an ultrasound scan. Sometimes a CT scan is needed when the picture is not clear.
How it is treated
The usual treatment is removal of the appendix (appendicectomy), most often by keyhole surgery. Most patients go home within a day or two of an uncomplicated operation.
Recovery
Light activity within days, desk work usually in one to two weeks and heavier work later. Return to the doctor for fever, increasing pain or redness at the wounds.
