Upper GI endoscopy: why it's done and how to prepare

An upper GI endoscopy is a short camera test of the food pipe, stomach and duodenum. It finds the cause of symptoms such as persistent acidity, pain, bleeding or swallowing trouble.

Why it is done

To find the cause of long-lasting acidity or upper abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing, repeated vomiting, vomiting blood, black stools, or unexplained anaemia and weight loss.

How to prepare

Do not eat for about 6–8 hours before the test. Tell the hospital about blood-thinning and diabetes medicines in advance — you may need specific instructions. Bring earlier reports and someone to accompany you if you will be sedated.

During the test

A numbing spray is applied to the throat, and light sedation may be given. A thin flexible tube is passed through the mouth. The test usually takes 10–20 minutes. Small tissue samples (biopsies) may be taken; this does not hurt.

After the test

You rest until the throat spray or sedation wears off — usually up to an hour. A mild sore throat or bloating is common. Do not drive the same day if you were sedated.

When to call the hospital

Severe chest or abdominal pain, fever, vomiting blood or black stools after the test — call +91 89517 23114 or come to the hospital, which is open 24 hours.
