When to see a doctor
Fever lasting more than three days, fever above 103°F (39.4°C), or any fever in someone with diabetes, kidney disease, pregnancy or a weak immune system.
Warning signs: go to hospital now
Bleeding from the gums or nose, black stools, severe stomach pain, repeated vomiting, breathlessness, confusion, a stiff neck, a fit, very little urine or extreme drowsiness.
Tests that may be ordered
A complete blood count including platelets, and tests for dengue, malaria or typhoid depending on your symptoms and the season. The doctor will explain why each test is needed.
What helps at home
Rest, plenty of fluids and paracetamol in the correct dose. Do not start antibiotics on your own, and avoid painkillers such as ibuprofen or aspirin unless a doctor advises them, because they can be unsafe in dengue.
Fever in children and older adults
Babies, young children and elderly people can become unwell faster. See a doctor early if they are drinking poorly, unusually sleepy or breathing fast.
