How it works
The surgeon makes a few small cuts, usually 5–10 mm, and passes in a thin camera and fine instruments. The abdomen is gently inflated with gas so the surgeon can see clearly on a screen. The operation itself is the same as open surgery; only the access is smaller.
Common operations done by laparoscopy
Gallbladder removal for stones, hernia repair, appendix removal and diagnostic laparoscopy to find the cause of abdominal pain.
Preparing for surgery
You will have blood tests and an anaesthesia check. Tell the team about every medicine you take, especially blood thinners and diabetes medicines. You will be told when to stop eating and drinking before surgery.
Recovery
Most patients walk the same or next day and go home within one to three days. Shoulder-tip pain from the gas is common for a day or two. Desk work is often possible within one to two weeks; heavy lifting waits longer.
Questions worth asking your surgeon
Why is laparoscopy recommended for me? What are the risks for my operation? What is the estimated cost and what could change it? When can I return to work? Who do I call if I have a problem after discharge?
