What is the difference?
Open surgery uses one larger cut so the surgeon can work directly. Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery uses a few cuts of about 0.5 to 1 cm, a camera and fine instruments, with the inside of the abdomen shown on a screen.
Common operations done by keyhole
Gallbladder removal for stones, hernia repair, appendix removal and several gynaecological procedures are commonly done laparoscopically.
Benefits for most patients
Smaller wounds, usually less pain, a shorter hospital stay, a lower chance of wound infection and an earlier return to work and daily activity.
When open surgery may be better
Very large or complicated problems, some emergencies, extensive scarring from earlier operations, or certain heart and lung conditions. Sometimes a keyhole operation is changed to open during surgery for safety; this is a sound decision, not a failure.
Questions to ask your surgeon
Is keyhole suitable for me, and why? Who will do the operation? How long will I stay in hospital? When can I return to work? What does the estimate include?
