Some symptoms cannot wait for an appointment. If you see any of these signs, go to the nearest hospital emergency at once and call ahead if you can.

Chest pain and breathlessness

Chest pain or pressure, especially spreading to the arm, jaw or back, with sweating or breathlessness, can be a heart attack. Sudden severe breathlessness is always an emergency.

Signs of a stroke

Face drooping on one side, weakness of an arm or leg, or slurred or confused speech. Note the time it started; treatment works best when given early.

Injury and bleeding

Heavy bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure, head injury with vomiting or drowsiness, suspected fractures, and serious burns.

Poisoning and bites

Swallowed poison or pesticide, medicine overdose, and snake or dog bites. Bring the container or a photo of it. Keep a bitten limb still and do not cut or suck the wound.

Other emergencies

Severe stomach pain, a fit, fainting or unconsciousness, high fever with confusion, and any heavy bleeding or severe pain in pregnancy.
