Common signs
Irregular or missed periods, acne, extra hair on the face or body, hair thinning on the scalp, weight gain that is hard to lose and difficulty becoming pregnant. Not every woman has every sign.
How it is diagnosed
A gynaecologist asks about your periods and symptoms, examines you and usually orders an ultrasound of the ovaries and blood tests for hormones, thyroid and blood sugar.
Why it matters long-term
PCOS increases the chance of diabetes, high cholesterol and, over many years, problems with the lining of the womb if periods stay very infrequent. Regular check-ups help catch these early.
How it is managed
Regular exercise and a balanced diet help many women, and even modest weight loss can bring periods back. Medicines can regulate periods, control skin and hair symptoms or help with ovulation when pregnancy is wanted.
When to see a gynaecologist
If periods are irregular for several months, if you have been trying to conceive for a year (or six months if over 35), or if acne and hair growth are troubling you.
Questions patients ask
Is PCOD the same as PCOS?
The two terms are used for the same condition in everyday practice in India. Doctors more often use PCOS, polycystic ovary syndrome.
Can I get pregnant with PCOS?
Yes. Many women with PCOS conceive, some with help to ovulate. A gynaecologist can advise on the right steps.
