Heavy or irregular periods: when to see a gynaecologist

Period problems are common and usually treatable. Heavy bleeding, bleeding between periods and any bleeding after menopause should always be checked.

Published by Disha Hospital, Chitradurga · Updated

What counts as heavy

Needing to change a pad every one to two hours, passing large clots, bleeding for more than seven days, or feeling tired and breathless from blood loss.

Common causes

Hormone changes, PCOS, thyroid problems, fibroids, polyps and, less often, infection or problems with the lining of the womb.

Usual tests

A haemoglobin test for anaemia, thyroid tests, a pregnancy test where relevant, and an ultrasound of the uterus and ovaries.

Treatment options

Depending on the cause: iron for anaemia, medicines to reduce bleeding or regulate periods, and procedures for fibroids or polyps when needed.

See a doctor without delay if

You bleed after menopause, bleed between periods or after intercourse, have severe pain, or feel faint. Heavy bleeding in pregnancy is an emergency.

Questions patients ask

Is it normal for periods to be irregular?

Some variation is normal, especially in the first years after periods start and near menopause. Periods that are regularly more than 35 days apart, or missing for three months, should be checked.
